Formed from the ashes of various local bands in the Utah music scene, Adding Machines was started in 2008 as a trio by husband and wife Jake Haws and Melissa Dupree Haws, along with friend and former bandmate, Dan Smock. All talented multi-instrumentalists, the trio switched duties regularly throughout their set, as well as inviting a string of local musicians to back them up when needed. The band featured a folk/alt-country sound; a departure from their previous rock-oriented projects. Influences included the Shins, Wilco, Neil Young, CSNY, Bob Dylan, the Beatles, and the Decemberists.
In 2009, the band self-released their debut EP, “Sweet Dreams.” The band produced and recorded the songs themselves in Muse Recording Studio, which was owned (along with Muse Music Cafe) by Jake and Melissa.
In 2010, the band recorded a cover version of Weezer’s “Across The Sea” as part of Drew Danburry’s Reliving the 90s project. Later in 2010, frequent guest musician, Matt Weidauer, was added the lineup as a permanent member.
In 2011, the group recorded and released their debut full length album, “Death & Taxes.” The group continued to follow the story-telling approach that they started with their EP.
During their run, they performed numerous times around the Provo/Salt Lake area, including the Sundance Film Festival and the Sego Arts & Music Festival. Amidst band members moving and other obligations, they played their final show June 24, 2015 at Velour in Provo, Utah.
